ADVENT SERMON SERIES

AnNOUNcing Advent

Strength from the Savior for More than a Season

The season of Advent is more than just a way to mark time in preparation for Christmas.  It’s a season that comes with its own message for those who are hurried and harrowed, especially around this time of year.  Yes, take heart!  The Lord is glad to meet you where you are, offering four-fold encouragement for the season, and beyond!

Advent 1 (11/27): Prophets' Candle, symbolizing HOPE:

  1. The belief or expectation that something wished for can or will happen.
"I still have some hope that I can get to work on time."
  2. The actual thing wished for
  3. A person or thing that is a source of hope
"We still have one hope left: my roommate might see the note I left on the table."
  4. (in Christianity) The virtuous desire for future good
"But now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; and the greatest of these is love. (1Cor. 13:13)"

Advent 2 (12/4): Bethlehem Candle, symbolizing FAITH:

  1. Mental acceptance of and confidence in a claim as truth without proof supporting the claim.
"I have faith in the healing power of crystals."
  2. (Christian theology) Belief and trust in the Christian God's promises revealed through Christ in the New Testament.
  3. A feeling or belief, that something is true, real, or will happen.
"Have faith that the criminal justice system will avenge the murder."
  4. A trust in the intentions or abilities of a person, object, or belief in spite of a lack of knowledge in the person, object, or belief.
"I have faith in the goodness of my fellow man."
  5. A system of religious belief.
"The Christian faith has been spread by proselytizing."
  6. An obligation of loyalty or fidelity.
  7. The observance of such an obligation.
"He acted in good faith to restore broken diplomatic ties after defeating the incumbent."

Advent 3 (12/11): Shepherds' Candle, symbolizing JOY:

  1. The feeling of happiness, extreme cheerfulness.
"They will be a source of strength and joy in your life."
  2. An activity etc which causes this feeling.
"The joys and demands of new parents."

Advent 4 (12/18): Angel's Candle, symbolizing PEACE:

  1. A state of tranquility, quiet, and harmony, e.g., a state free from civil disturbance.
  2. A state free of oppressive and unpleasant thoughts and emotions.
"That will give me some peace of mind."
  3. Harmony in personal relations.
