AS WE GATHER
In the Small Catechism we learn that the summary of the first three Commandments, the First Table, is found in the words: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” And the summary of Commandments 4–10 in the Second Table is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37, 39). Paul simplifies it even more, proclaiming that, “Love is the fulfilling of the law” (Romans 13:10). So often, though, our love for God and others falls short of every command from our holy Lord. Yet, even in our fallen condition, we are shown and given a perfect love that remains through the giving of His own Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Claimed as His own and forgiven, we then live under the grace of His cross and empty tomb, that we are by faith empowered to love as He has first loved us.
